It stands for Bus Rapid Transit In practice, it represents an articulated transport that travels through an exclusive road corridor and, because of this, it is a faster alternative of traveling. This model of mobility exists in 140 countries and, here on the city of Rio de Janeiro, it is managed by a group of private companies of passengers transport, gathered in a consortium. On the corridors, around 450 thousand people are transported every day. The numbers of BRT Rio impress, mainly for being a relatively new investment: 8 thousand trips are already made daily with a fleet of 440 buses.
A uniqueness was the movement during the Olympic Games. Being one of the main city mean of transportation, BRT Rio transported, in all its system during the competition days, 11.7 millions of passengers. This public is greater than the population of Portugal, which is of approximately 10.3 million inhabitants.
Transoeste is the first corridor in operation in the city of Rio de Janeiro and carries, per day, 216 thousand passengers, in 60 kilometers of exclusive road, 62 stations and 4 terminals (Alvorada, Santa Cruz, Campo Grande and Jardim Oceânico).
Its first phase was launched in 2012, with the route that connected Barra da Tijuca to Santa Cruz, in the West Zone. In sequence, it was expanded to Campo Grande and Paciência.
In August 2016, Lote Zero was implemented, where the BRT integrates with the subway line 4, at Jardim Oceânico terminal.
Launched in 2014, on the eve of the World Cup, the express corridor connects Alvorada terminal, at Barra da Tijuca, to Tom Jobim International Airport, at Ilha do Governador. Daily, the corridor serves 234 thousand passengers, that travel through its 39 kilometers and 45 stations that connects 27 neighborhoods of the North and West Zone.
At Madureira and Olaria stations, the BRT is integrated with Supervia train and in Vicente de Carvalho it integrates with subway line 2.
Launched in August 2016, the corridor, with 18 stations and 3 terminals (Recreio, Centro Olímpico and Sulacap) has 26 kilometers of exclusive road. The expectation is that, when fully operational, the road, which passes through 11 regions, carries 70 thousand passengers per day and reduces travel time by up to 60% to passengers that travel between Av. Salvador Allende, in Recreio, and Deodoro.
Differently from Transoeste and Transcarioca, where the Local Government of Rio de Janeiro is responsible for maintaining the roads, Transolimpica is maintained by Concessionária ViaRio S.A., that also manages the toll and offers the services of rescue and medical aid on the whole stretch.
